This is my first post for my new weekly feature, Fun on a Dime! I’ll be sharing fun, simple, and inexpensive ideas for kids, families, parents, and moms! Also, I would love to feature your ideas, so feel free to send me an email at motherhoodonadime @ gmail . com!
1) Bring the snow indoors!
This is one of my favorite activities when it snows! My littlest girl (age 2) likes to be outside in the snow for just a little while (she’s not a fan of cold hands!), so I bring the snow inside. Simply fill up a few bowls with snow. Lay down a towel and pass out cups, measuring spoons, spatulas, and any other desired items. Have fun scooping and playing in the comfort of a warm house!
2) Make a masterpiece with birdseed!
Let your little ones explore and design their own creations in the snow with birdseed! They can also get in a little alphabet practice by making letters in the snow!
3) Come in from the cold outdoors and make “Snowman Soup”!
Heat up a steaming mug of hot chocolate — this is your “soup”. Throw in some marshmallows — this is your “snowman”. Have fun watching your “snowman” melt! (We turned this into a relay. You can check it out here.)
4) Make an ice-skating rink indoors.
Put on some socks and pretend to skate! We had fun gliding, twirling, and sliding.
*If your floors are pretty slick and/or your children are prone to accidents, you might not want to attempt this activity! 🙂 Otherwise, I think it is probably safer than ice-skating outdoors!
5) Make snowy paintings!
Use a marshmallow dipped in paint to add snow to a winter scene. You can find step-by-step directions here.

I brought the snow indoors for Caleb yesterday; he had a blast. I also like your idea with the bird seed.

Thanks for posting the marshmallow painting idea! I used that while I watched my friends 3 year old when she had an appt. We don’t have snow and since they moved from an area with LOTS of snow in winter she’s having a hard time. We actually made 2 snowmen! I used 3 different sized cans from her pantry to make the snowman. Worked great! Thanks for posting your ideas!

I decided it was even good exercise for me!!

You can also mix shaving cream and elmers glue equal parts mix until glossy. It creates puffy paint and dries puffy! I use barbasol because its cheap.
I’m bringing some snow in for my 3 year old tomorrow. Never thought of it before. Thanks so much.

When I had a day care I would have the moms bring in their empty dish soap bottles for snow painting. We filled the bottles up with colored water and let them “paint” in the snow. It was really pretty in the snow banks along the driveway.

🙂 We tried that for the first time during this snow!! My photos didn’t turn out too well, so I guess I’ll have to wait for another snow (I plan to share about it on my other blog)!
