Hop out of the car. Put it on the front porch. Ring the doorbell and RUN!
These were the instructions I gave my kids when we delivered this hot chocolate basket to our friends’ front porch. I had backed my car into their drive for a quick getaway. However, the execution of our plan wasn’t quite that simple. It involved a lot of heat of the moment questioning on whether my daughter pushed the doorbell hard enough and then massive yelling with my son telling her to RUN and her yelling that THE BOY was COMING to the DOOR.
It was complete chaos and it was wonderful!
We love being able to be a blessing (and create a little family fun) for others. I am always looking for ways to teach my kids kindness, thoughtfulness and service. And since the cold weather has arrived, we made this hot chocolate basket for friends.
Would you like to make your own snowy Doorstep Hot Chocolate Basket? Here is how I made it. Make sure to grab the free printable “Stay Warm” tag below.
What You’ll Need:
- Container/Basket (I used an empty dishwasher detergent bucket.)
- White Acrylic Paint and Brush
- Mod Podge and Brush
- Artificial Snow
- Ribbon
- Hot Glue Gun
- Ingredients for a Yummy Cup of Hot Chocolate
- Hot Chocolate, Marshmallows, Whipping Cream and Sprinkles
- Containers for ingredients and scrapbook paper (if desired)
- Tissue Paper and/or Basket Filling
- Printable Tag
When I used my last dishwasher detergent pac, this container was just screaming for a fun use. Truthfully, this is how the whole thing started. Empty container…needing a crafty touch…looking to be cute and useful.
If you want to skip the snow and crafty part, just find a box and throw some wrapping paper on it for your container.
Before gluing the snow, my container needed two coats of white acrylic paint so that the labeling would not show through.
Then working in sections, I put a coat of Mod Podge on the container and covered it with the artificial snow. TIP: Use a old box lid to work in and help catch the mess.
Doesn’t this look fun? I love the texture!
With hot glue, I put red ribbon around the top and also glued a separately-made bow to the front.
I like to repackage my ingredients for a fun, homemade-style look. I used a mason jar for the hot chocolate, a Wilton decorating bag for the marshmallows, a clean dessert take-out container for the sprinkles and I covered the whipping cream with a piece of polka dot scrapbook paper.
We put everything in the container, added the cute snowman tag (Get the free Stay Warm Tag HERE) and delivered the gift.
Mission accomplished!
