Buck Denver. Who in the world is Buck Denver? And what does he have to do with the Bible anyway?
What’s in the Bible? DVD Review

Those were my first thoughts when I picked up a copy of Buck Denver Asks…What’s in the Bible (Episode 1) last October. I can get a little persnickety sometimes…
I took it home, watched it with the girls, and I was hooked.
First off, you have to know the What’s in the Bible? series was created by Phil Vischer from VEGGIE TALES! I AM a Veggie Tales fan (and have been since college…before I had any kiddos), so I was pretty convinced I would already like the series…
And, when I had the opportunity to review the 2nd DVD in the series (What’s in the Bible: Let My People Go), of course I said yes!
There are two 25-minute episodes on this DVD. The first one deals with how the books were chosen to be included in the Bible and also takes a look at the 2nd half of Genesis. The other episode is a survey through the book of Exodus. You can find out more about the scope and sequence of the series at the What’s in the Bible website.
Here’s a brief video of ONE of the songs from the DVD. Seriously…I’ve been singing three of the songs for the past few days. They are catchy (and I can’t seem to get them out of my head)!
You can also find even more resources to enhance the videos on the website:
- Biblical and character printable coloring pages
- Puzzles (crossword, word search, etc.)
- Finger puppets
- Bible flashcards (for DVD 1)
Here’s what I love about What’s in the Bible:
- I can watch it with my kids. It’s not like watching a painful, slow episode of that big purple dinosaur or one of those other mind-numbing shows. In fact, it keeps me chuckling throughout. There is plenty of humor my girls don’t get — but I do. And, there is plenty of humor the girls laugh at…that I don’t get! 😉
- The girls are learning to see the big picture and how the Bible is a cohesive book. Big ideas — like salvation and redemption — are explained in simple terms (and in song)! Several of my girls are right-brained learners, so the novelty and zaniness of the stories gives them hooks to remember what they’re seeing.
- Once all of the DVDs are finished, the What’s in the Bible series will walk kids (and parents) through the entire Bible from Genesis to Revelation.
Let’s just admit it: Exodus is a hard book. There’s animal sacrifice, death, Passover, disobedience, idol worship, and so on, but What’s in the Bible: Let My People Go does an excellent job couching the tough stuff in terminology little ones can understand. It doesn’t gloss over it, but instead, leads kids to understand the main ideas and make connections with their own lives.
I heard Phil Vischer on the radio once (you can find the interview here) talking about the series and his motivation behind creating it. He said he wanted to make a series that not only captivated the kids — but also the parents. He wanted to increase our Biblical literacy in a fun, engaging way. I think he’s done just that. As I’ve watched the shows, I know I’ve learned right along with the girls.
No doubt, videos cannot take the place of reading and studying the living, active Word, but this series can definitely spur interest and teach your child (and you) some things about the Bible you didn’t even know!
(Oh…and by the way, Buck Denver is a news reporter and one of the main characters in the show. Just in case you wanted to know!)
