Throughout the past few years, we’ve done several different Bible studies for kids and families during our Bible time each morning. This year, I’m looking forward to a new one on the fruit of the Spirit from Michael and Carlie Kerchavel. I *met* Carlie through some other homeschool bloggers, and I was excited when I found out about her and her husband’s new book called Learning to Speak Life: Fruit of the Spirit. They gave me a copy of the eBook for review. I finally had a chance to take a look through it and decided a few weeks ago to use it during the fall semester!

Learning to Speak Life: Fruit of the Spirit is written specifically for families with children ages 3 – 12, and it really focuses in on learning God’s Word together as a family. Michael and Carlie believe “that in order to change the words you speak, you must meditate on Bible scriptures, confess scriptures and positive confessions that line up with the Bible, write the scriptures, and reinforce all of this through family activities and prayer.”
The book covers the 9 fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, etc). One chapter is devoted to each aspect–with each chapter being broken down into smaller sections:
- Scripture
- A definition of that fruit of the spirit
- 5 confessions to speak out loud each day
- Copywork
- A short role play
- Silly sayings
- Short Story
- Family discussion questions
- Family project
- Prayer
- and a section on digging deeper into God’s Word
We plan to use one chapter of Learning to Speak Life per week this semester (you can see our other curriculum choices here). We will be reading the Scriptures and confessions each day and adding another section or two on various days of the week.
I’ve wanted to do a study on the fruit of the Spirit for a while, and this will be a great starting point!
Are you interested in utilizing this book? Carlie and Michael have agreed to give away a copy of the book, so use the Giveaway Tools form below to enter! This giveaway ends on August 25 at 10 PM CT.
