Day #60 of our 101 Days of Summer Fun for Kids:

Sun-Baked Recycled Crayons

Supplies:
- Broken crayons with the paper removed
- Muffin tin
- Cooking spray
- Sun

1) Remove the paper from the crayons. Break the crayons in small pieces. Such a tedious task, but the girls stuck with it pretty well.
2) Grease the muffin tin.
3) Fill the muffin tin 1/3 to 1/2 full of crayon bits.
4) Set outside in direct sunlight. Check after 30 minutes, one hour, and so on, until the pieces are melted.

5) Allow to cool completely. Remove from the muffin tin!
We filled a few of our tins a little bit high, and it took forever for them to melt completely. I tried covering them with foil and placing them on a baking sheet on the concrete, but I finally decided to put the pan in the car in the sun (on a tray of course…I don’t need melted crayon all over the interior)!
If neither of these work for you, you can also just stick them in the oven for a ten to fifteen minutes at 350 degrees!

I made these last weekend for my 2yr old. I also teach 1 yr olds at a daycare and used them as birthday presents for 2 of them with birthdays this week.
That’s a great idea to use them as presents!
Keep the sun as your oven and put them in your car on the dashboard or over the backseat, whichever has the most level surface. If you feel you need to, put the whole tin in a plastic bag, or put down protective newspaper. I’ve not done these crayon melts, but I have used my car as an “oven” to dry items before.
We did heart shaped ones at valentine’s day. There’s all kinds of different shaped molds available to buy. I think they’d make great bday party favors.
C did the heart-shaped ones at Girl Scouts one time. I don’t have any cool pans though…and I didn’t want to buy any!
Hey! We are doing this curriculum and my daughter loves it! She is capable to do some kindergarten things but just want to make sure she has pre-k down pat! Thank you SO much for putting this together and sharing it with others. I literally had NO idea where to even start but my older boys piano teacher’s daughter referred me to you! I do have a question… which letter falls around Christmas because I think I started 2 weeks early.
Thank-you,
Sarah Edwards
