This spring I started looking for something special to do with the girls next fall–something that would be fun, but also educational and character building. So often, I’m tempted to just gloss over some character issues I see in my children (and myself) and move on to the next thing, but I know that isn’t going to help my girls in the long run. When I ask myself what I hope my children are like in 20 – 30 years, I know that character is more important to me than being highly intelligent or having the highest paying job or being able to organize a home immaculately. I want them to be women of integrity (something I just failed at since I was supposed to have this review up last week)! 🙁
Anyway, back to that something special I was looking for. I searched and searched…
And I found it!
Enter We Choose Virtues.
I’d heard several friends talk about the program, but I wanted to see what it was all about. When I was given the opportunity to test it out and review it, we were ALL excited about it! Even my oldest…who keeps asking me when we get to do some more. Good thing, too, since I plan to use it throughout the next school year!
The very first thing we did was to take the Family Character Assessment. I had the girls fill out one and I filled out one, too. I think we all have a few virtues we need to work on!
Next, we got to know the kids of Virtueville. With names like Oboe Joe, Cake Jake, and Penny Jenny, the characters and virtues they represent definitely stick in your head. That first night after we’d had a lesson about Oboe Joe and obedience, my middle daughter told my youngest daughter, “Remember, we need to be obedient like Oboe Joe.”
I have to admit that at first I was worried that my newly nine-year-old would find the little characters a little cheesy, but they really are fun and cute and the stories stick with you!
We Choose Virtues is available in all kinds of formats. You can get kits for families, homeschool, children’s church, and even kits for schools. You can also choose between a Christian version with Bible verses to go with each virtue or a version without verses. I love that they have so many options–you could easily use this in a school setting or at home!
