I’ve shared several goal setting resources (brainstorming questions and a goal planning sheet) over the past few days. The girls and I are working on goals for 2013, but I thought it was important to go back and see how things went over the past year.
Here were a few of my goals I set last year and my progress on them.
Spiritual:
Read through the Bible in a year with the The Narrated Bible in Chronological Order (NIV).
I just crossed off half of it, because I only got about halfway through! This year, I’m going to use a plan on the YouVersion Bible app for my Kindle.
Grow in hospitality (by inviting others into our home regularly).
Explore adoption (this is also a personal goal, as well — they all kind of go together).
I read a few books and explored a few websites and talked to several different people. We are still open to this, but we don’t have any clear direction at this point. This will continue to be on my list.
Financial:
Pay off our home mortgage as quickly as possible.
Ongoing….but we accomplished the extra towards principal every month plus two extra lump sum payments.
Save towards replacing John’s 30-year-old truck.
Woohoo! We have saved a good amount, but now we are just waiting to find a truck that fits into that budget. We just haven’t seen very many at our price range, but we will wait until we do!
Try a 1-month cash-only challenge.
I don’t know where the time went, but we haven’t done that one. I continue to use our computer envelope system and have stayed under-budget, so we’re doing okay there. I do still want to do this, so I’m scheduling it for March.
Fitness
Complete another 1/2 marathon
I ran one last spring–you can read about it here.
I completed Insanity last winter and finished all but two or three weeks of P90X2. It was super-intense and my body just needed a break.
Work-out 4-5 per week throughout the year.
I’m counting this as accomplished even though there were a few weeks I only hit 2-3 times per week. The main point was to stay active!
Marriage
At least two date nights per month + 2 at-home date nights per month to save on babysitting costs.
Two overnight getaways together during the next year.
Mothering
Hold and cuddle each child daily. (I don’t come from a touchy-feely family, so I don’t gravitate to this naturally. And now that they are getting older, and we spend so much time doing school and other activities, I just don’t think about it!)
Apply principles from Wise Words for Moms and the book Don’t Make Me Count to Three.
This is ongoing….I’m still working on approaching discipline from a grace-filled Christian perspective. I lean towards legalism, so I have to constantly be in prayer about it!
Take each girl on a mommy date (one per month).
I just completely bombed on this one! We did stuff together, but it was not a dedicated “mommy date” each month!
Personal:
Read 12 non-fiction books + 5 fiction titles.
I read quite a few more books than this, but I never added them to my list. However, I failed to finish three of the books on my list, so I’ll move them over to 2013!
Write a workshop and present it at three churches.
I gave up on this goal about halfway through the year. I just go too busy with the other things I was doing and decided I didn’t want to pursue the goal at this time. I’m pondering whether to try it again this year….or not!
Make home management, homeschool, and blogging binders.
I finished the home management and blogging binders. I’m still working on getting everything together for a homeschool binder.
Continue to simplify my life.
Blogging:
Become better at planning ahead. Make a yearly, monthly, and weekly plan.
Failed at this! I’m still planning by the seat of my pants….
Put tighter limits around blogging and non-blogging time to prevent burn-out and give enough of myself to my little ones.
I did pretty well with this until Black Friday through now. The deals picked up and I found myself spending a ton more time blogging than normal. I’ll be back on schedule in the new year, but this is one where I constantly have to reevaluate.
Redesign and combine Motherhood on a Dime and The Amazing Mess. (Don’t worry! I’ve been working on a plan to *hopefully* make the transition super-easy!)
How did you do on your goals?
I had no idea there was someone else in this world who thought like I did… I’m sure there is a whole colony of us, but still…never knew anybody out there was a goal setter. It’s my F-A-V-O-R-I-T-E thing to do. Anyway, just loved the entry and appreciate the motivation! Thanks and keep up the good work!!
Thanks, Dori! So glad you’re joining me here!
