After a week of being jacked-up on sugar, running on the fumes of exhaustion, and taking care of a sick little one (the night before Christmas, no less!), I’ve been taking the last few days to recuperate and slow down.
Here are a few ways I’m attempting to take care of myself and my family:
1) Eat a high-protein diet and drink lots of water
Carbs were not my friend over the past week! Well, they were my friend…but they’ve pushed me to terrible highs and lows! Extreme Chocolate Cheesecake…need I say more?!!
To bring my appetite under control and stop the sugar overload, I’m on a high-protein diet for the next two days. Chicken, skim milk, tuna, eggs, and low-fat yogurt are on the menu (suggestions via [easyazon-link asin=”0307887960″]The Dukan Diet[/easyazon-link]). I’ve found very good success using the diet and those basic foods to bust through cravings. Of course, it could be that I can’t stand the thought of eating any more protein so I just choose not to eat!!
No matter what you’re eating, be sure to drink a lot of water. Staying well-hydrated definitely helps fight fatigue, too.
2) Exercise
We’re still doing [easyazon-link asin=”B002QZ1RS6″]INSANITY[/easyazon-link] — and it has gotten to the insane point!
I know that isn’t for everyone — but no matter what you’re doing, make time for a brisk walk, a quick run, or game of tag with the kids. Even if you’re super-busy, try to sneak in a couple minutes of exercise here and there. It always surprises me how much better I feel with just a small amount of exercise!
3) Give myself permission to rest
I wanted to jump right back into my schedule and routine this week, but it just hasn’t been feasible. Taking care of overtired and sick little ones is draining, so I’ve given myself permission to sleep a little longer this week. It’s amazing how much better some extra sleep makes me feel!
4) Pray
Although we’ve had lots of celebrations for the birth of Jesus, I just haven’t taken the time to sit in His presence! I suggest lighting a candle in your bedroom, putting on some relaxing music or just sitting in silence, and closing the door for five minutes (or two if your kids can’t be trusted alone that long)! Breathe deep, spend a bit of time in prayer, and recharge your spirit by connecting to God!
What are you doing to maintain balance in your life?
In the next few days, I’ll share a little bit more about goal-setting….I can’t believe we’re just a few days away from the new year!
