My husband peeked over my shoulder at the computer the other day — he was incredulous when he saw these photos!
“You’re going to show people how to bake a potato?!!”
“Well, yes. Actually, I am!”
I could be totally crazy. I could be totally out-of-my-mind (and I probably am). 🙂
However, here’s how I used to bake a potato: Wash and dutifully wrap the potato in foil, prick it, and stick it in the oven.
Then, about a year ago, I found the trick to perfect baked potatoes every time.
Are you ready?
DO NOT WRAP YOUR POTATOES IN FOIL!!

1) Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Wash and dry your potatoes. Roll them in olive oil.

2) Prick the potatoes.
3) Sprinkle with sea salt. I cover both sides!!

4) Bake for an hour or until tender (depending on the size of the potatoes).
This makes the most perfectly baked potato! We love it, and it’s super easy!
But I have to know — am I crazy?!! Is this how everyone makes baked potatoes?!!

LOL, Stacie. I can just see John saying that!
I don’t wrap my potatoes in foil, but I also don’t coat them in oil and salt. I would love them that way, I’ll bet!
You would love them!! They are great that way — and the girls love to eat the skins now!!

I don’t bake many white potatoes, but when I bake sweet potatoes I don’t use foil (much easier!). I like the oil and salt idea though–yum! To go along with baked pototoes, my mom gave me the idea for making super yummy steak fries…after washing the potatoes, cut them into steak-fry-esque strips (I’m not too concerned on how they end up looking!).
Apply olive oil (either by coating in a plastic bag or just pouring it on the strips) and then liberally apply your favorite seasonings…I used salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder and basil. Next time I’m going to try rosemary. Bake on 350 for about an hour. Super yummy and my 17 month old ate them up!
Sounds delicious, Melanie! We love sweet potatoes around here, too! I’m thankful my grandma always has some to share from her garden!!

This is so funny! My husband and I just had a conversation about making baked potatoes the other day. I have always just put mine in the oven not wrapped or anything and he thinks I am a bit crazy. Good to see someone else does it the same way I do.
I think it makes them so much better! My girls would never eat the skin before and now they love it!!

I LOVE baked potatoes – but hate heating up the oven for them. I do all of the same beginning steps, wash, prick, spray with olive oil and salt and then place them on a paper towel and stick in the microwave for about 7 min, depending on the size – you may need to add a few extra minutes, especially if you have more than one. they come out perfect too – but, if I am baking fish or something in the oven, i will throw them in the oven for a few minutes at the end to crisp the skins (i love the skins and that is where all the vitamins are!) or if there is steak or chicken on the grill – toss them on the grill for a few min works well too. enjoy! Every one is against white potatoes, but they are very low fat, low calorie and a slow digesting carb with good healthy fiber – they are very good for you and great with some fresh vegis on top!

I make mine the same way, but I used to go the foil route until a friend suggested making them your way. You’re not crazy – lots of people don’t know you can’t make potatoes without wrapping them in foil. They taste much better this way and you don’t have the added expense of using the foil. Thanks for reminding me how yummy they are … I have a bag that is going to need used up soon.
I thought so!! Hope you enjoy your taters!!

Funny. I’ve never wrapped them in foil. I cover in olive oil but rub on lemon pepper instead of salt.
So you do think I’m weird?!! 🙂
I’ll have to try lemon pepper — sounds delicious!
