We did have a bright spot last weekend when we
celebrated my middle daughter’s 7th birthday!
Life Rewind
You know the saying “When it rains, it pours”? Well, that’s what life feels like these past few weeks! We’ve been hit by a terrible cold this week, my sister was put in the hospital with signs of preterm labor, our kitchen floor flooded, there have been several deaths in our community, a sweet friend suffered a miscarriage, and life just feels a little overwhelming.
I’m reading Glorious Ruin: How Suffering Sets You Free, and it is SO good. I have highlighted much of the book, but here is one part that stuck out to me this week:
“Pain and suffering loosen our grip on this temporal life. Deeper suffering can lead to deeper surrender. In time, our career aspirations and our personal opinions become less important. Our bodies age, our joints stiffen and ache, our eyes grow dim, digestion slows, and sleep becomes difficult. Yet at the same time, the ups and downs of daily life grow smaller and smaller. With each new pain and health complication, the world becomes less inviting as the next life becomes more appealing. In its own way, pain paves the way for a graceful departure (Eccles. 12:1-14). Death, after all, is not the end but the threshold of a new day.” Tullian Tchividjian, Glorious Ruin
The whole book really challenges some things I see in our culture as far as suffering…the minimizing of suffering in our churches…the idea that we should always look on the bright side and pull ourselves up by the bootstraps and get over it…the insistence that we must be suffering because of something we’ve done. I’ve been reminded that suffering is an essential part of our existence, and it also makes me remember how much my heart longs for heaven.
Anyway…maybe a little too much for a weekly rewind post, but it’s just where I’m at this week!
