Spring is in the air in many places around the country! Where I live, there is still snow on the ground (!) but it is almost gone, thankfully! I am ready to open the windows for good and see some flowers opening for the bright sunshine!
In celebration of this fresh season, I bring you some of our favorite spring themed books, perfect for the preschool through elementary age but likely to be loved by children of all ages!
Are You Ready to Play Outside? by Mo Willems
We love the Mo Willems Elephant and Piggy books! Their quirky humor makes my kids giggle uncontrollably {everyone from the almost 3 year old to the 8 year old!}. They teach important life lessons in a unique way.
Oh, the Things Spring Brings! by Golden Books
If you haven’t yet read any of the Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That books, you are missing out! Based on the TV show, these books are very appealing to my 5 and 8 year old. They teach scientific facts in rhyming fashion that makes learning enjoyable. I really like reading this series of books with my children! This is a book we are looking forward to reading soon!
Clifford’s Spring Clean-Up by Norman Bridwell
Somehow, even the messes Clifford makes are adorable and make for teachable moments with my kids. Their cleaning isn’t perfect but the more they work at it the better it gets, just like it does for Clifford 🙂
Planting a Rainbow by Lois Ehlert
This book is so colorful! It’s a story told from a child’s perspective about how the family gathers and plants bulbs and seeds to grow a flower garden. It’s a great way to teach your kids the names of flowers and how each one grows in it’s own unique way.
Spring is Here by Lois Lenski
A classic book first published in the 1940s (that I didn’t know was classic until recently!) that we are checking out from our library this week!
Jo MacDonald Had a Garden by Mary Quattlebaum
In this story (part of the Jo MacDonald series), you can sing along with the main character to learn how butterflies, bumblebees, and birds help a garden to thrive. Kids can find out about ecosystems and learn good stewardship of the creation God gave us!
Spring – from The Circle of Seasons Series by Gerda Muller
This book has beautiful illustrations and follows a young child as she plays with lambs, plants seeds, paints Easter eggs and watches new birds. This story can be found in The Circle of Seasons as well, which contains all 4 seasonal books in one!
All Things Bright and Beautiful by Jan and Mike Berenstain
This Berenstain Bears book teaches the words to the hymn All Things Bright and Beautiful as the bears explore nature during a Sunday School walk. We love this series and I have appreciated the Christian focus in some of the more recent books!
The Story of the Resurrection Eggs: Benjamin’s Box by Melody Carlson
We really enjoyed reading this book to our kids last year! There is a part of the story on each page that goes along with the Resurrection Eggs you often see around this time of year. The narrative might get a bit long for the youngest set, but it is definitely one of our favorites!
Thunder Cake by Patricia Polacco
This is a book we checked out from the library for my daughter with a few doubts. It didn’t really look that interesting but it came highly recommended by our local librarian who is also a friend! Turns out, my 5 year old girl and I both loved it! With unique illustrations and a great sense of anticipation throughout the book, Thunder Cake is the story of a girl who is scared by a thunderstorm, comforted by her grandmother who prepares her for the wind and rain by making a “Thunder Cake”. Stacie even has a recipe for a real Thunder Cake you can make to go along with the book, perfect for kids who like to be in the kitchen!
Do you have any favorite spring themed books? Share them in the comments! I am always looking for new ideas!
Jenn is a daughter of the King, happily married to her college sweetheart and mom to four wonderfully spunky children. She spends her time taking care of her home and family, coaching a speech team, blogging and dreaming up more ideas than there are hours in the day. She shares her thoughts on staying debt free, raising children of character and living a life of intentional faith one day at a time at The Purposeful Mom.
Jenn is also the author of God’s Word in My Heart: A Scripture Learning Guide with Memory Verses.
Lots of books here I haven’t read before! Love Lois Lenski. She has such fun stories and neat illustrations.
I was glad to see Jen included that book by her–as I haven’t read it before!
I need to read more of her books! Thanks, Deanna, for your comment!
Thanks! I was able to reserve most of these books at my public library. We’ll enjoy our spring theme, even if it’s still freezing here.
I am completely with you…so ready for warmer weather here!!
Right with you, Rebecca! It’s going to be 22 degrees next Monday–we are needing spring ASAP 🙂 Glad you could get the books!
Usborne Books has some great books for Easter baskets! “Easter Bunny Flap book”, and “That’s Not My Lamb” are 2 of my favorites.
